Want to get ahead of the summer crowds? Check out these hot spots where the long, sunny days bring adventure, discovery, and total relaxation.
1. Le Marche, Italy
The Adriatic Coast and the Le Marche region, in particular, remain largely undiscovered by American travelers to Italy. June is an ideal month to explore this coastal gem, when prices are still low and the vibe is mellow in preparation for the high season in August. Start your Italian getaway on the Conero Riviera, in Sirolo, home to the coveted Blue Flag beaches of Urbani, San Michele, Sassi Neri, and Due Sorelle, marked by dramatic limestone cliffs. Go on to explore the neighboring village of Numana. Then see the natural splendors of Parco Regionale del Conero, whose hiking trails offer stunning views. Hop in your car rental for a night out in Ancona or go inland for a stroll around the medieval walled city of Urbino, once at the center of the Italian Renaissance.
Make your way south along the coast to Grottammare and San Benedetto del Tronto, known locally as the Riviera delle Palme for its characteristic 4-mile-long promenade lined with palm trees, restaurants, bars, and cypress-shaded playgrounds. This area is popular with families, thanks to the Adriatic’s clear, shallow waters that are perfect for young kids. From here, visit Ascoli to sample the local specialties of olive all’ascolane (fried olives stuffed with meat).
In Numana, stay at the Hotel Giardino Suites&Spa, a family-friendly hotel with a pool and beach shuttle. For something extra special, book a few nights at Agricola Lanciani, where you can stroll among the vineyards, learn about winemaking and spend the evening out on the spacious terrace sampling local grape varieties, including Passerina, Pecorino, and Montepulciano.

2. Beacon, New York
Nestled in the Hudson Valley, surrounded by picturesque rolling hills, the Catskills mountains, and farms, Beacon may be the coolest small town in America. When Dia Beacon, a sprawling contemporary art museum, opened in 2005, it transformed this sleepy town into a true art destination, well worth the 90-minute trip from New York City. After checking out the latest installations, hang out on Main Street, flanked by art galleries, antique shops, breweries, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants, including the Hudson Valley Food Hall. Weekends bring outdoor farmers and flea markets, where you can rummage for unique gifts and taste early summer strawberries, blueberries, and cherries from local farms.
In June, temperatures hover in the 80s, ideal for exploring Beacon’s other treasures, like Bannerman Castle on Pollepel Island out on the Hudson River. In the summer months, it hosts movie nights. Find more historical relics and ruins at the Craig House Institute, whose famous patients included Zelda Fitzgerald, Truman Capote, and Marilyn Monroe, and then head to the Old Beacon Hat Mill and Dennings Point Brick Works. And just when you thought this Dutchess County town couldn’t get any cooler, each June, the area throws a huge taco festival with tastings, workshops, live music, and the Taco Takedown Eating Competition. This year on June 24, it’s taking place just across the Hudson River in Newburgh, New York.
The Dutchess Inn and Spa at Beacon on Main Street is your top choice for classic comfort plus spa treatments. The added bonus here is the rooftop deck with cozy loungers made for stargazing well into the night. Budget travelers can bed down at Quality Inn & Suites in the neighboring town of Fishkill.

3. Okinawa, Japan
If you’re looking for a wellness and adventure escape, you’ll find that and more on the beautiful islands of Okinawa. Though some rain is possible early in the month, you’ll still have plenty of days to enjoy hot, sunny weather. Go island hopping while trying out multiple water sports. Snorkel inside the Blue Cave off Cape Maeda, explore Yabiji coral reefs off Miyako Island, and see the colorful underwater wonders of the Kerama Islands, where you might even encounter sea turtles. Or stay above these turquoise waters parasailing, riding a banana boat, or on a glass-bottom cruise.
As designated “Blue Zones,” life expectancy on these islands is much higher than the global average. That’s thanks in part to a predominantly plant-based diet. So make sure to sample local specialties, including a stir fry called Gōyā chanpurū and Okinawa soba soup. Those who visit Okinawa in June can see the unique sagaribana flower. These luminescent tropical flowers look like fireworks and only bloom in the evening, releasing a sweet aroma throughout the night. And summer on Okinawa is also marked by the Eisa Nights, vibrant folk dance performances throughout the island’s districts.
The ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort, surrounded by a coral reef with access to a private beach and plenty of water sports, is perfect for those looking for a relaxing all-in-one getaway. But for seclusion, Japanese-style rooms, and open-air rooftop baths, Hyakunagara is your top choice.
