Maximize 2026 vacations with our ultimate travel hack Our guide to help you unlock more paid time off

Wish you had more time off? Well, turns out you do (with some help from yours truly)

How to make your PTO go further

"No thanks" said no-one ever (and nor will they) to paid vacation days. In fact, there's actually no federal law that mandates minimum paid leave in the US, though most companies give around 10 days a year. But by planning smarter, you could stretch your vacations by a lot more than you even realise was possible. Here's how...

The days we recommend taking off:

Take Monday, 19–Friday, 23 January to turn 5 days of PTO into a 10-day vacation for Martin Luther King Jr Day
Take Tuesday, 17 – Friday, 20 February to turn President’s Day into a 10-day vacation
Take Monday, 18 – Friday 22 May to turn a week of annual leave into a 10-day trip for Memorial Day
Take Friday, 4 September plus from Tuesday, 8 – Friday 11 September to turn 5 days of PTO into 10 days off for Labor Day
Take Monday, 28 - Wednesday 30 December to get 10 days off between Christmas and New Year

Ideas of where to visit in 2026

Based on our suggestions of how to group your PTO with national holidays, these top trending destinations for American travelers for 2026 will help you make the most of that extra vacation time:

Jaipur: 5 days off for a 10-day MLK holiday

Jaipur, India
17 – 25 January

India’s majestic Taj Mahal may be one of the 'New Seven Wonders', but the 300-year-old palaces of Rajasthan are every bit as extraordinary. Jaipur, the Pink City, makes the perfect base for exploring the region’s royal gems, including the striking latticed façade of the Hawa Mahal, the candy-colored arches of Patrika Gate and the mirrored halls of Amer Fort. Between sightseeing, wander markets stacked with block-printed textiles and handcrafted jewelery, making an obligatory stop for a steaming cup of masala chai.

Madeira: 5 days for a 10-day Memorial Day vacation

Madeira, Portugal
16 – 25 May

Madeira is a floating botanical garden on the Atlantic. A mix of volcanic cliffs, lush laurel forests, terraced vineyards and small villages carved into mountainsides. Every turn feels dramatic: one minute you’re above the clouds on Pico do Arieiro, the next you’re hiking through jungle trails older than the United States itself! Home to world-class wine so divine that it's globally recognised as its own fortified wine category, with its own protected designation and production methods.

Bodrum: 5 days off for a 10-day Labor Day trip

Bodrum, Türkiye
4 – 13 September

Turquoise coves, ancient worlds and late-summer ease. It's no surprise that Bodrum has long been considered a playground for Türkiye’s stylish crowd escape to. In September, it’s particularly spectacular. The water is still warm, the crowds have thinned, and the sun softens into a golden haze that makes the whole peninsula glow. Bodrum itself is a postcard of whitewashed houses, bougainvillea, and boats bobbing in the harbour, while the surrounding seaside villages, such as Türkbükü, offer hidden bays or sumptuous seafood shacks on the sand in Gümüşlük’s. This part of Türkiye is abundant in ancient riches too, such as the ruins of Halicarnassus, and the Castle of St Peter and of course unmissable hammam rituals.
