Kissed by the sun and surrounded by crystal clear waters, the Maltese archipelago is always ready to welcome tourists for an unforgettable vacation. With over 300 days of sun throughout the year, Malta offers culture, art and natural beauties. Its beaches are recognized as having the cleanest waters in Europe and this places Malta on the top of the bucket list for many travelers from all over the world.
Reaching Malta
The easiest way to reach Malta is by booking a flight to Malta International Airport in Luqa sing Skyscanner’s powerful search tool to find the best deals. This airport is located about 4 miles from Valletta. You can either rent a car to get to the Capital of Malta, or get a bus that will drop you off at the city center. There are buses every 20 minutes from the airport.
Discover the top 5 beaches in Malta:
1. Blue Lagoon
The first and most famous of the top 5 beaches in Malta is the Blue Lagoon. It lies on the tiny island of Comino, off the Northern coast of Malta. Most people plan a day trip to the Blue Lagoon, hopping on the ferry from Valletta to Comino. However, the newest trend to experience this beautiful lagoon is by renting a boat.
Boat Options
The first one is to rent a private yacht for the day, which could be a nice idea if you are traveling with a group of 6-10 people.
The second one is to buy a ticket for a bigger charter boat. This will give you the chance to meet new people, tan on the boat without having to push your way through a crowded beach and have an overall fun experience. Reaching the Blue Lagoon by boat will take less than two hours, but to get to the white stretch of sand you will have to swim: bigger boats aren’t actually allowed into the lagoon.
2. Crystal Lagoon
The best way to reach this paradise is by boat, as walking on the rocks from the Blue Lagoon can be particularly dangerous, especially in Summer when the temperatures can be extremely high.
This secluded spot is much quieter than its famous twin, and offers a relaxing environment where tourists and locals can swim without having to deal with loud music and noise. Many young tourists jump into the turquoise waters of the Crystal Lagoon from the cliffs, but it’s not advisable as accidents happen often.
According to many visitors, this cove looks much like Hawaii, even if it’s in the middle of the Mediterranean sea! The Crystal lagoon is also a great spot for divers due to the many underwater caves.
3. Ramla Bay
Situated on Gozo, Ramla Bay is famous for its golden/orange sand. Gozo is also known as the “Island of Calypso”, because a legend says that Calypso kidnapped Ulysses and kept him here for 7 long years. If you visit Ramla Bay, make sure to walk to Calypso’s cave. The sandy path leads to a particularly beautiful cave that is believed to be the place where Ulysses was held captive.
At Ramla Bay you will find bathrooms, showers and tiny kiosks that sell typical Gozitanian dishes for all pockets, giving you the chance to spend the day here. The green hills that surround the bay are perfect for an afternoon hike, as they offer spectacular views of the area. You can easily reach Gozo with a ferry from Malta.
4. Sliema
The shore here is rocky and you won’t find a proper “sandy” beach, so it is advised to bring a pair of water shoes to be able to enjoy the crystal clear waters of this bay. The beach is free and there are steps carved into the stone that dive into the water at regular intervals.
Because you will swim straight into the deep blue water, the area is perfect for confident swimmers and snorkelers who want to enjoy the colorful reef. Don’t worry, if you don’t feel confident enough, or if you’re traveling with kids, many hotels in this area offer infinity pools right on the beach!
On the other side of the road, there are many bars and restaurants that liven up the area making it the perfect location for every type of tourist.
5. Dwerja Bay
Last but not least, Dwejra Bay, also on Gozo, is a very famous area on the Maltese archipelago. Here, HBO filmed key scenes from the award winning TV-show Game of Thrones, with the beautiful Azure Window in the background. In March 2017, this natural stone arch collapsed because of a brutal storm, but part of it is still visible. The bay lies next to a particularly scenic cliff named “Fungus Rock”, because the locals believed that the particular kind of mushroom that grew here had therapeutic properties. Malta’s Knights used to protect this area and those caught stealing the “magic” mushrooms were immediately executed.
Next to where once was the Azure Window, a natural pool is often crowded with tourists and divers. The Blue Hole is a rock formation that leads to a series of caves and underwater tunnels decorated with beautiful parts of reef. The place is perfect for those who like to snorkel… or just lay down on a flamingo floatie!
