Just lovely

We visited for a weekend break, a truly delightful building packed full of history. Staff were friendly and kind. Food was fab and service excellent.
Warm and cosy with open fires and slept in the same room Charles Dickens had many years ago.
Lovely clean rooms with nice fluffy towels and comfy bed.
Would definitely recommend .

Underwhelmed.

An odd place - has a bit of a 'Royston Vassey' feel about it but it's a beautiful place and I can overlook the less than warm welcome from the staff after having the most fabulous Sunday lunch back in September. Had a family member staying and thought I would treat them to the same experience but sadly, that wasn't to be. Called to book earlier in the week to see if they could fit 2 in for Sunday lunch - timing was a bit of an issue as we were planning a day out. I didn't know what their serving times were - board outside and website and staff on the phone all say slightly diff things - but I was told the chef had a break in the afternoon between lunch and dinner so they don't serve between 4pm and 6pm. We couldn't get a booking around 3 as a group of 8 had already booked so I plumped for the 6pm as we'd be hungry by then. I had quite a long chat on the phone with the lady from the pub, saying how gorgeous the Sunday lunch was, how I'd enjoyed and wanted my sister, who is a bit of a foodie as an ex chef - to come along and see for herself and at no point did the lady say that they serve a different evening menu. I guess the term 'Sunday lunch' is a bit of a clue but my home town has loads of pubs and restaurants that serve a roast all day on a Sunday. Anyhow, having got the menu for the evening service, we both opted for the burger which was absolutely delicious. What was a disappointment was the 'house chips' as described on the menu turning out to be those skinny tasteless generic fries that you get everywhere. If it had said fries on the menu I'd have asked if there was an alternative or had a side salad and no fries. I know some places do serve different chips/fries depending on the dish but I looked through the menu and the fish and steak dishes all said house chips, the sme as the burger. What they served are not chips - they are fries made from extruded potato paste the same as Mcdonalds and most other fast food and pub outlets. Disappointing for a 4 star restaurant. The girl behind the bar also gave us a gluten free Speckled Hen which we didn't see till we tasted it and it was a bit odd and checking the label we saw the gluten free reference. Either they only sell this one type, in which case they should say so, or they sell ordinary and gluten free in which case they should check the labels. Distinctly underwhelmed this time round - it was chilly in the dining room - the radiator came on hot as we were leaving. I won't be rushing back.

I had a quick look at all of your other reviews. I would suggest anyone reading this does the same. The Telegraph wrote recently that more often than not these reviews reveal more about the psychology of the person writing the review than they do about the venue being reviewed and this is a fine example is it not. However I will provide a few responses.
- All of our literature and signs clearly state lunch service last new orders are at 2.30PM. Later if you are already seated and eating.
- Thanks for telling everyone how many pubs in Northampton serve Sunday lunch all day. How wonderful.
- Thanks for telling us that the home made burgers we make our wonderful
- We dont use and have never used the expression House Chips. Sorry you are completely wrong, maybe you are thinking of a a pub back at home.
- We offer both types of chips and you will see these clearly displayed as side order offerings and neither are made from potato paste.
- We have 3 Draft Real Ales always available on our bar so unless you particularly like bottled beer we would never have offered you a bottled beer, so you must have specifically ordered the Speckled Hen.
We have had a fabulous summer here, serving incredible food, super drinks and luxury 4 poster hotel rooms with wonderful friendly happy staff.... all from what is described by Heritage England as The Oxenham Arms Hotel, one of the finest buildings of its period in Devon. We are quite happy with our clearly advertised unique and beautiful product and service level. So please whatever you do, don't be rushing back. Simon Powell. Owner of The Oxenham Arms Hotel

Superb. Great 'feeling' and history the Americans yearn for

What a wonderful place! Even if it were just the history it would make a compelling stay. I tell my American friends about the fact it is built around stones that are 1000 years older than Stonehenge and the building has been there for nearly 900 years and they want to go. On top of that the staff/owners are lovely and breakfast was yummy. Not easy for anyone with a disability, as I have because the floors are uneven (note age) and the stairs are steep. But if you get past that it is still worth it. Off the beaten track, quirky, full of character. Lovely place. You need to visit.

This was an unscheduled stop on route to Cornwall due to bad weather. What a pleasant surprise, a beautiful old Inn a short distance from the A30. The staff were friendly and helpful, great service a lovely evening meal and an excellent breakfast. We will definitely be returning with hopefully better weather.

Amazing hotel, amazing friendly staff. Felt at home with them. Bonus was the food was truly outstanding. Would recommend and we will be back soon. 5 star plus!!!
